Scientific and Theoretical Conference "Somoni - a Pillar of National Statehood"


On October 30, 2025, a scientific and theoretical conference on the theme "Somoni - a Pillar of National Statehood" was held at the National Library of Tajikistan. The First Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Tajikistan Hokim Kholiqzoda, Assistant to President of the Republic of Tajikistan on Economic Issues Nematullo Hikmatullozoda, President of National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan Qobiljon Khushvakhtzoda, the leadership of the National Bank of Tajikistan, ministries, departments, and government agencies, representatives of international and financial institutions have attended the conference. The conference was organized at the initiative of the National Bank of Tajikistan in honor of the 25th anniversary of introduction of the national currency - somoni.

The Chairman of National Bank of Tajikistan Firdavs Tolibzoda, as the conference organizer, have congratulated the participants on the 25th anniversary of introduction of the national currency, emphasizing that the national currency issue has been a focus of the state and government of Tajikistan since the first days of the election of the Founder of Peace and National Unity – Leader of the Nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon, as head of the state. The national currency is considered one of the fundamental pillars of national statehood, and the date of its introduction is an important event in the modern history of Tajikistan's statehood. Then, First Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Tajikistan, Hokim Kholiqzoda, has delivered a report on the "History of the 25th Anniversary of Introduction of the National Currency – Somoni." Recalling the history of the first years of independence, the economic situation, and the introduction of the first national currency – the Tajik ruble, and then the somoni – he has stated: "The national currency is not only a financial instrument but also one of the symbols of national statehood. Time has proven that the decision to create an independent monetary system and introduce a national currency was the right and timely step, creating a favorable foundation for the country's economic independence."

It was noted that it was on the personal initiative of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, the honorable Emomali Rahmon, that the decision was made to issue new national currency notes, the somoni, and on October 26, 2000, Presidential Decree No. 415 was signed introducing the somoni, the new national currency, into circulation effective from October 30, 2000. Today, the somoni is a worthy symbol of independent Tajikistan and a reliable medium of exchange for our country's developing economy.

The conference was continued with presentations made by Nematullo Hikmatullozoda, Assistant to the President of the Republic of Tajikistan on Economic Issues, Qobiljon Khushvakhtzoda, Doctor of Economics and President of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan, Sharif Rahimzoda, Doctor of Economics and Professor, Arkady Notkin, a representative of Giesecke & Devrient GmBx (Germany) and other participants. They have discussed the history of coin minting in ancient times, the initiative of the Founder of Peace and National Unity – Leader of the Nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon to introduce a national currency, the history of its issuance, the selection of images of national heroes, historical sites and monuments, and the security features of the national currency.

During the conference, the Chairman of National Bank of Tajikistan has presented participants with new commemorative 100-somoni banknotes, issued to mark the 25th anniversary of the national currency, the somoni. In particular, it was noted that over the past 25 years, the somoni has become a symbol of state independence, economic stability and national pride. In this regard, with the support and consent of the Founder of Peace and National Unity – Leader of the Nation, His Excellency Emomali Rahmon, and in honor of this important historical date, the National Bank of Tajikistan has issued a commemorative 100-somoni banknote for the first time since the country's independence. The commemorative banknote is not only a symbol of historical memory but also a symbol of sustainable development of the country's monetary system and national economy. Its design reflects the cultural, historical and architectural elements of Tajikistan, testifying to the ancient civilization, creativity, and ingenuity of the Tajik people.

In conclusion, it was noted that the banking system, inspired by the comprehensive care and support of the Leader of the Nation, is making every effort to conduct outreach efforts to foster respect for the national currency, as well as to reflect important historical dates on the national currency, using modern scientific and technological advances to improve the design of the national currency and introduce new security features to keep up with the times.
