One should always be careful when handling cash

Ensuring the stability of the state's banking system and strengthening public confidence in the national currency is one of the tasks of central banks. But despite constant efforts to ensure financial stability, the issuance and circulation of counterfeit money remain one of the most acute problems facing the financial system.

Today, some individuals or groups are attempting to deceive unsuspecting people by using color copying techniques to introduce counterfeit currency into circulation.

Recently, several videos have appeared online showing banknotes with inscriptions like "Surprise ticket" and similar novelty banknotes in denominations of 20, 50, 100, 200, and 500 somoni circulating within the country. These videos have generated interest and sparked discussion among social media users.

We would like to inform citizens that, although these tickets may resemble the national currency in visual characteristics such as size, color, and images, they do not contain typical protective elements such as a watermark, security thread, inscription, kinegram, printed element against copying, overlapping images, an icon for the blind, or other protective technologies.

To prevent this situation, it is important that citizens to pay attention to the security features of the national currency, the somoni, when trading in cash.

The National Bank of Tajikistan constantly strives to protect the level and quality of the country's national currency from all kinds of counterfeiting threats. To this end, banknotes are produced using modern processes and polymer materials. These banknotes include special laser elements, color-shifting ink, and protective coatings, which are easy to recognize.

We remind that making or circulating counterfeit currency issued by the National Bank of Tajikistan or any foreign currency is a crime according to the Criminal Code of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Republic of Tajikistan.

Combating counterfeit money and preventing its use is not solely the responsibility of the National Bank of Tajikistan but also the duty of all citizens. Therefore, we urge citizens to always be cautious when handling cash and to carefully examine the security features of banknotes.

If suspicious money is found, citizens are kindly asked to contact the nearest branch of the Ministry of Internal Affairs or the State Committee for National Security or their respective personnel.
