International Financial Forum "ESG - as a Factor of Sustainable Development of the Country's Economy"


On October 31, 2024, with the assistance and support of the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, the National Bank of Tajikistan, the Association of Microfinance Organizations of Tajikistan, the World Bank Group (WB-IFC), the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the USAID office in Tajikistan, Accelerate Prosperity, IFAD, and international credit financial institutions an International Financial Forum titled "ESG - as a Factor of Sustainable Development of the Country's Economy" was held in Dushanbe.

In the opening session of the Forum, Deputy Chairman of the National Bank of Tajikistan Gulbahor Naziri, First Deputy Minister of Economic Development and Trade of the Republic of Tajikistan Ashurboy Solehzoda, Director, Councilor, Consul of Swiss Cooperation Office in Tajikistan Salome Shteib, Director of the USAID Economic Development Office Agata Sektor, First Deputy Chairman of the State Investment Committee and State Property Management of the Republic of Tajikistan Farrukh Yusufzoda, Deputy Director of the Agency for Innovation and Digital Technologies under the President of the Republic of Tajikistan Merali Bodurshozoda, Head of the World Bank Group in Tajikistan Farukh Sultonov, and Director of the Finance Department of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development in Central Asia Jahongir Shamsiev discussed the forum's topicality. They also spoke about the preparation of relevant documents related to environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG), initiatives of the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan in this direction. This included discussions on developing a plan for transitioning to green practices, developing the green bond market, and introducing principles of sustainable financing by studying best international practices.

At a solemn ceremony, several financial credit organizations and both active and veteran employees of the country's banking system were presented with the Certificate of Merit and the Badge of Excellence by the Association of Financing Organizations of Tajikistan.

It is worth noting that the Forum's work was divided into two parts. During plenary sessions, experts from government ministries and agencies, international financial organizations, credit financial institutions, and digital companies in the country spoke on topics including "ESG - Current Issues and Best Practices in Responsible Investment," "The New Paradigm of ESG in Investment Strategy in Central Asian Countries: The Current Situation and Further Development in Tajikistan," and "Innovation in the Field of Financial Services to Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises – as a Factor in Achieving the Goals of Sustainable Development." They shared their experiences with participants regarding decision-making related to environmental, social, and corporate (ESG) management.

The panel discussions covered several topics related to green finance development in Tajikistan's financial institutions, including modern financial products for sustainable development, fintech as a factor in investment development, and the development of women and youth entrepreneurship based on ESG principles. The discussions explored a long-term strategy for building a successful and sustainable business model, taking into account global experiences and best practices applicable to Tajikistan.
